Commitment is the act of making time for something and sticking to accomplishing the task or activity. This skill is vital because it can help lead a person to a better future. For instance, if a person commits to doing 30 minutes of math practice daily, it will significantly affect their math abilities. This month’s Character Strong trait is allowing students as well as staff and teachers to practice enhancing their commitment skills. Some people might presume that they don’t need to practice commitment skills because they think that their commitment skills are already stable. This statement might be correct, but it won’t hurt to make your commitment abilities even better. Commitment shouldn’t be done just to complete the character dares and get a reward, but to help individuals develop their skills. In the end, the progress a person gets out of their practice won’t benefit anyone else, but only for the specific individual who accomplishes something. There is never too much practice! Do this for your future!

Here are some of this month’s character dares made by the CPM Counseling Team (more character dares can be found in the link below):

“Thursday 10/22: For the month of October, our character focus is COMMITMENT. This week’s focus is on Being Accountable. Today’s Character Dare is: Chores Galores: Ask your grown-up at home what 3 things you can do for them today. Then do those things (if possible) for the next 5 days. For example, if they ask you to load the dishwasher, take the dog for a walk, and sing your guinea pig a lullaby – make sure to do it with enthusiasm today and then follow up with it for the rest of the week without being told! Commitment is about consistency!

Friday 10/23: For the month of October, our character focus is COMMITMENT. This week’s focus is on Being Accountable. Today’s Character Dare is: Lean on Me: Commit to holding someone accountable with accomplishing a goal. This could be a younger sibling or friend or teammate. Make a plan to talk to one person about their goals and identify one you would be willing to help them commit to. This could mean giving them a daily phone call or text or setting up a time once a week to get together over zoom and check in.” – October Character Dares: Commitment
